Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is performed for specific hip joint including labral tears, cartilage injury, and bone impingement. It is performed through three small, one centimeter skin incisions. A fiber optic camera is placed into the hip joint so the physician can see exactly what is wrong and then to perform the procedure. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, which allows the patient to go home the very same day. Previously, hip surgeries required a large incision, several days in the hospital and extensive rehabiliation.
Patients who have hip and groin injuries who have tried non-surgical therapies can be evaluated by Dr. Johnson to determine if they are appropriate candidates for hip arthroscopy. "Hip arthroscopy is a great option for recreational and highly competitive athletes as well as elderly patients because it reduces recovery time, and the size of the skin incision compared to traditional open procedures," states Dr. Johnson.
