Hip Arthroscopy
Hip Arthroscopy

Sterling Ridge Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine recently added hip arthroscopy to the orthopedic services offered to patients in The Woodlands and the greater Houston area. This is a completely new option for hip surgery patients that will reduce their incision, reduce the risk of infection and make recovery much quicker.

Dr. Keith W.V. Johnson of SROSM is one of the first few fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in Houston who performs hip arthroscopic procedures. Arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, has been available for shoulders and knees for several years. However the hip is a completely new option for patients experiencing cartilage tears, bone impingement, labral tears and other hip-related injuries. This is perfect for the recreational and competitive athletes who want to bounce back as soon as possible to stay in shape.

After trying to use non-surgical options, Dr. Johnson will carefully evaluate each patient to see if hip arthroscopy is an option for them. The actual surgery is performed through three small one-centimeter skin incisions. A fiber optic camera is placed into the hip joint so the doctor can see the damage and determine what he needs to repair.

The surgery is then performed on an outpatient basis, which allows the patient to avoid a hospital stay. This is a great improvement over the former surgery that required a hospital stay and a much larger incision.
